How to structure a nonfiction book for KDP
A practical blueprint for front matter, chapters, back matter, file ordering, and KDP metadata so your nonfiction book is clear and upload-ready.
A nonfiction book lives or dies on structure. Readers skim, jump to the parts they need, and judge credibility in the first few pages. Kindle Direct Publishing, meanwhile, expects clean navigation and well-formed metadata. The good news is that one solid structure satisfies both audiences. This guide lays out a dependable shape for a nonfiction book and the KDP metadata that surrounds it.
The three parts of a book
Every nonfiction book breaks into front matter, body, and back matter. Keeping them distinct makes your reading order obvious and your export predictable.
Front matter
Front matter sets expectations before the content begins. A typical sequence:
- Title page — title, subtitle, author.
- Copyright page — copyright line, edition, rights statement.
- Dedication (optional) — short and personal.
- Table of contents — usually generated from your headings, not hand-typed.
- Foreword or preface (optional) — context, credentials, or a guest introduction.
- Introduction — what the book covers and who it’s for.
Keep front matter lean. Readers want to reach the substance quickly, and a wall of preliminaries before chapter one is a common reason people bounce.
The body: chapters
The body is your argument, broken into chapters that each do one job. A reliable chapter pattern:
- A clear chapter title that signals the takeaway.
- A short opening that frames the problem.
- Sections (
##) and subsections (###) that progress logically. - A brief recap or transition at the end.
Consistency matters more than cleverness. If chapter one opens with a story and ends with a summary, let the rest follow suit. Predictable rhythm helps readers and makes your table of contents read like an outline of the whole book.
Back matter
Back matter supports the reader after the main content:
- Conclusion — synthesize the through-line.
- Appendices — checklists, templates, reference tables.
- Glossary — for term-heavy subjects.
- Notes / references — citations and further reading.
- About the author — a short bio and a link to your other books or list.
- Also by the author — a soft pointer to the rest of your catalog.
Order your files so structure is visible
When your manuscript is a folder of Markdown files, number them so the file tree mirrors the book:

Numeric prefixes give you an at-a-glance reading order and let you insert or reorder without renaming everything. Leaving gaps (10, 20, 30 or 90, 91, 99) makes future inserts painless.
Metadata that KDP cares about
Your listing is part of the book. Capture these fields as structured data so they’re easy to review and reuse:

Description constraints
KDP’s book description has a maximum length (in the low thousands of characters), and it supports only limited formatting. Write it as a focused sales pitch: a strong hook, what the reader will learn, and who it’s for. Lead with the benefit, not your biography. Validate the length before upload so a too-long description doesn’t get truncated or rejected.
Keyword constraints
KDP gives you a fixed number of keyword slots (commonly seven). Use each slot for a phrase a real reader might type, not a single generic word. Avoid repeating words already in your title and subtitle, and steer clear of competitors’ names or claims you can’t support. Think in search phrases: “habit tracking for busy parents” beats “habits.”
Categories
Choose categories that genuinely match the book; precise, less-crowded categories are easier to rank in than broad ones. Pick from KDP’s published taxonomy rather than inventing labels, and let the two parts of your structure agree, so the description, keywords, and categories tell one coherent story.

- Heading levels never skip (no
